The club is sad to report that 1955 Premiership player, and Life Member Bob Gathercole passed away last evening. The Gathercole’s were one of the earliest families to settle in the area, and “Gadget” was an integral part of the fabric of the ‘Hillers, and in the ’55 Grand Final win, dominated off the Half Back Flank. During his playing days Bob worked on a poultry farm and would make it to training in between tending the chickens. The farm kept him fit and busy with Bob playing over 200 games for the Redbacks. One of Bob’s biggest thrills in his footy life was attending the 1955 Premiership reunion in 2005 where 6 of the champion teammates reminisced. This lead to Bob reconnecting with the Club, and since then he’s been seen cheering on the sidelines at numerous games, as well as becoming a member of our Redback Gold sponsorship club, even though on the pension. Bob was thrilled to see the team win two more flags in his final few years. Our condolences go to the Gathercole family. Bob was 83, and will be forever a Redback.
